/etc/X11/Xsession

From the Xsesson(5) man page:
/etc/X11/Xsession is a Bourne shell script which is run when an X Window System session is begun by startx or a display manager such as xdm.

/etc/X11/Xsession.options contains configuration options for the /etc/X11/Xsession script. See Xsession.options(5) for more information.

startx calls xinit with the following arguments:
$client (set to xterm by default)
$clientargs -- $server $display $serverargs
after supplying values to those arguments

Control files are in /etc/X11/Xsession.d and are:
20x11-common_process-args
30x11-common_xresources
40x11-common_xsessionrc
50x11-common_determine-startup
