Do not install the package gapcmon. This is a GUI apcupsd monitor. If this package is installed, you will get an error - Error contacting apcupsd @ localhost:3551: Connection refused - whenever you run apcaccess (or, alternatively, /etc/init.d/apcupsd status)
Install the package apcupsd, edit /etc/default/apcupsd and change
ISCONFIGURED=no to ISCONFIGURED=yes
Then edit /etc/apcupsd/apcupsd.conf making sure to read each stanza carefully.
Start the daemon with /etc/init.d/apcupsd start and check that it is working by typing apcaccess and/or /etc/init.d/apcupsd status
